Spring Is Here: Learning French Beyond the Four Walls

Spring has arrived in Melbourne.

The days are getting longer, the city is waking up, and there are more reasons to take your French outside the classroom.

Because learning French shouldn't stop at the classroom door.

At Cosmopoli’French, we believe some of the most useful learning happens when you actually use the language.

Over lunch. On a walk through Melbourne. At a picnic. Looking at art. Even singing French karaoke and hoping nobody notices the one lyric you definitely made up.

It's about giving your French somewhere to go.

French is different when you actually use it

You can learn vocabulary from a list and study grammar from a book.

But eventually, someone asks you a question in French and waits for your answer.

Real conversations aren't neatly organised by grammar topic. You have to listen, find the words you know and respond.

Sometimes you'll get it right. Sometimes you'll take a grammatical wrong turn.

That's part of learning.

Connection before correction.

When you're focused on communicating with another person, French stops being an exercise and becomes something you're actually using.

When Melbourne becomes part of the lesson, even more so when the weather is getting nicer, French stops being something you study and starts being something you live.

A coffee on a Fitzroy terrace becomes an excuse to practise small talk with the person next to you, in the same unhurried way Parisians linger over a café at a table on the pavement, Melbourne's venues, briefly, a French stage. Even a walk through the city with French eyes turns ordinary streets into a vocabulary lesson, les fleurs, les arbres, le printemps, without a textbook in sight.

The city isn't a backdrop to your French; used well, it's the syllabus.

Learning outside the classroom doesn't mean leaving structured learning behind. It means putting what you've learned into practice.

This Term 4, we're introducing À Table, our new French Lunch Club. Twice each term, students will meet at a different French restaurant in Melbourne for a teacher-hosted lunch in French.

It's one more opportunity to practise real conversation, enjoy French culture and use the French you're learning in a completely different setting.

And that's the point.

Each experience gives you a different reason to speak.
