Why Speaking French Is Different From Learning French

October 15, 2026•2 min read

Have you ever studied French, understood a question perfectly, and then found yourself completely lost for words when it was your turn to answer?

You're not alone.

You might know your vocabulary, understand the grammar and even follow a French conversation. But when it comes to speaking, everything suddenly feels a little harder.

That's because knowing French and using French are two different things.

You Know the Words. So Why Can't You Say Them?

When you study French, you have time to think. You can look up a word, check a verb ending or read a sentence twice.

Conversations don't work like that. Someone asks you a question, and you need to understand it, find your words and respond while the conversation is still moving.

And if you're worried about making mistakes, it gets even harder. You start checking every sentence in your head before saying it out loud.

The answer isn't necessarily to memorise more vocabulary or study more grammar. Sometimes, you simply need more opportunities to speak.

How to Get More Comfortable Speaking French? Here are three things you can start doing.

1. Learn expressions, not just individual words.

Phrases like Ah bon ? (Really?), Et toi ? (And you?) and Tu peux répéter ? (Can you repeat that?) help you react, ask questions and keep a conversation going.

2. Stop waiting until your French is perfect.

You'll make mistakes. We all do. The important thing is to keep going, even when you can't find the exact word or your sentence isn't quite right.

3. Find people to practise with.

Speaking regularly helps you get used to responding spontaneously. You learn to listen, react and express yourself without translating every sentence in your head.

And little by little, it starts to feel more natural.
